Scouting 2007
![]() |
2007 was the 100th anniversary of the founding of scouting. The year was marked by a large number of special events and media coverage and in amongst all the thoughts and comments about the centenary was the following on BBC South Today:
"It was a great honour to be promised to go God and the Queen, with my left hand touching the flag of the United Kingdom, me a little 8 year old South American rain forest Caribbean indian. Now I'm 46 years old, I always carry with me the basics and principles taught in my Boy Scout Den, "1st Sunningdale" of Berks. Honour, moral, good manners and your daily good deed, which I do still today with the same joy as I did when I was in 1st Sunningdale. SCOUTS DO YOU BEST, WE WILL DO OUR BEST. Scouts of today, remember your promise, "...to do my duty, to my best..." To God and the Queen. From Venezuela, Continental Caribbean and South America, Adios. Pedro Salinas, Yello Six Sixer"
Pedro Salinas
If anyone remembers Pedro or knows how to get in touch with him please let us know.
You can find the full article here: BBC South Today - Scouting Centenary - More of Your messages. Pedro's message is towards the end.
VOLUNTEER REQUIRED
In order to take this forward we are trying to contact as many of those who have been involved with 1st Sunningdale Scout Group over the one hundred years (don't think we will find anyone from the start), to invite them to our Centenary Event next year.
We would like a volunteer to act as the focal point for such a project, contacting known past members of the Group, asking for information on any of their friends who were also in the Scout Group and preparing a mail list from which we could send out the details of the event. We will also advertise in the press and put up notices asking past members to get in touch with that person.
If you are interested in this extremely challenging, but rewarding task, please do get in touch with me.
If you enjoy researching, this task would definitely appeal.
Many thanks
Doug Home
